Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle stands with unwavering support for our students who have been affected by the federal government’s recent immigration policy announcements. These sudden policy changes create uncertainty and fear in our students’ lives, from those seeking asylum, to green card holders, to those in the final stages of the naturalization process. We wholeheartedly condemn this. 

In the past week, multiple students who recently passed their naturalization interviews have been informed that their oath ceremonies have been canceled.  We know how arduous the naturalization process is, and we see the tremendous amount of work, often years' worth of study, that our students put into preparing for their opportunity to become citizens. Cancelling these oath ceremonies, and more broadly threatening to change the rules about whether those on the path to citizenship remain eligible to become citizens as promised, is unconscionable.   

Many of our students have risked their lives for the American cause in their home countries. They have worked side-by-side with American soldiers. Others have waited for years in refugee camps. They have come to this country determined to make it their home. We are heartbroken to see America break its promise to them.  

Our organization is built on the foundational principle that education empowers individuals to reach their true potential. Our students come to us because they believe that citizenship, English, and basic education will improve their lives and their ability to make a home in Charlottesville. We believe in the dignity and integrity of our students. We value them as clients, neighbors, and friends. For forty-two years, our commitment to our students has not changed, nor will it.
