Citizenship Classes

LVCA offers citizenship classes throughout the year. Classes vary in length and subject. Classes are open to anyone in the community who is within two years of applying for U.S. citizenship. 

  • Classes are free
  • Class uses Intermediate level English
  • Classes start in April 15 and end June 13 (9 weeks)

New Students and students who have not taken classes with LVCA in the past year: 

Before the class starts, you will need to have a one-hour meeting to fill out our registration forms and take an English test. You can come to our office for the meeting, or we can meet on Zoom. After you register for the class, we will contact you to schedule your meeting.  

If you do not have the textbook, we ask you to donate $20 toward the cost of the book if you are able. You can mail us the textbook donation or use this link to pay online.

Spring Intermediate Citizenship Classes - Starting the Week of April 15th

English for the Interview class: We will learn vocabulary for the interview questions and work on the reading and writing words on the citizenship test. 
Zoom Options:

  • When: April 16 to June 11 (9 weeks)
  • Days: Tuesdays 
  • Times: 9:00 to 10:15 am OR 6:00 to 7:15 pm
  • Where: Zoom

In-person Option (at the Jefferson School in Charlottesville)

  • When: April 15 to June 10 (9 weeks)
  • Days: Mondays
  • Time: 6:00 to 7:30  pm
  • Where: Room 125, Jefferson School City Center (233 4th St NW, Charlottesville)

Civics Class: We will learn about the government and history of the United States to answer the 100 Civics Questions. 
Zoom Options:

  • When: April 17 to June 12 (9 weeks)
  • Days: Wednesdays
  • Times: 9:00 to 10:30 am OR 6:00 to 7:30 pm

Winter Basic Citizenship Classes - Starting the Week of January 16th to March 5 and April 15 to May 7

In-Person:

We recommend our Basic Citizenship class for students who are level 1 or lower. Basic English Citizenship class works on building basic reading and writing skills you need to prepare for citizenship in a small-class setting.
