Responsibilities of the Board of Directors

  • Determine the organizational mission and purpose
  • Select the Executive Director
  • Provide proper financial oversight
  • Ensure adequate resources
  • Ensure organizational planning
  • Recruit and orient new board members and assess board performance
  • Ensure ethical and legal integrity and maintain accountability
  • Enhance the organization’s public standing
  • Determine, monitor, and strengthen the organization’s programs and services
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the functioning of the Board
  • Support the Chief Executive and assess performance

Expectations of LVCA Board Members

  • Board members should plan to spend an average of 1-2 hours per week. Many activities peak near the time of each major operational event. Activities will include:
  • Attend all Board meetings which are held either monthly or bimonthly.
  • Read all documents prior to the meeting and be prepared to discuss.
  • Participate in operational events and fund-raisers.
  • Be an advocate for the organization in the community, recruiting learners, supporters, volunteers, donors, and board members.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization.
  • Make an annual, personal, financial contribution to the organization based on capacity.
  • Assist in fundraising for events and the annual solicitation; assist in the identification of potential donors.
  • Commit initially to a two-year term; may serve a maximum of 3 consecutive 2-year terms.
  • Provide overall policy, planning, and financial guidance to the organization and staff throughout tenure.
